Caleb has been practicing historical swordsmanship since 2003 when he first purchased Guy Windsor’s ‘Swordsman’s Companion’ at his local Borders bookstore. He joined Tattershall in 2015 on the day he moved to Southern California and studied with Gary and Jeff until 2017 when a military assignment relocated him. Since then he has instructed on the east coast with David Biggs and at Tattershall Tulsa.
Caleb is more widely known in the SCA as Master Julien de la Fontaine and is a Master of Defense, a member of the Order of the White Scarf, and a Black Tiger. He is also a Knighted member of the harnischfechten Company of the Lynx Argent. He travels often to study, and besides pilgrimages back to Tattershall Long Beach, he has a close training relationship with Robert Childs of the Black Tigers, Devon Boorman of Academie Duello, and Guy Windsor in the UK.
He primarily teaches Italian Rapier and Swetnam Rapier, but also practices harnischfecten (historical armored combat) and has a large HEMA library with a layman’s knowledge of most European swordsmanship manuals through the mid-1600’s.
